Topic:

Using Lean Six Sigma to Accelerate CMMI Implementation

Abstract:

Are you thinking about using CMMI or conducting a CMMI-based appraisal and arriving at Maturity Level X soon? Or maybe you are burned out with CMMI and are looking for a fresh perspective? Here are some lessons learned that can help you spend your efforts well and avoid some common hazards on your journey.

The celebrations are over; we achieved an enterprise-wide CMMI Maturity Level 2. Now what? The Process Group is collecting lessons learned, and we need to further institutionalize our processes as we move on to Maturity Level 3. At the same time, the Army has mandated that Lean Six Sigma (LSS) be used to facilitate improvement. The US Army Materiel Command issued a policy letter that recognizes that the Warfighter is our ultimate customer, to focus on projects that have high value to our customer, and to use LSS as the continuous improvement "starting point" while adapting other best practices to unique demands.

How can we leverage our newly trained Green Belts and Black Belts in expediting our process improvement efforts? This is the unfolding story of the Communications-Electronics Life Cycle Management Command’s Software Engineering Center in its endeavors in implementing continuous process improvement using LSS and CMMI.

Main objectives of the presentation

  • Overview of Lean and Six Sigma and how they combine in practice
  • Why the Army is adopting Lean Six Sigma (LSS)
  • How the Software Engineering Center intends to leverage LSS to accelerate CMMI implementation to support the Warfighter

Biography

Diane A. Glaser is a Computer Scientist/Project Lead at the US Army CECOM LCMC Software Engineering Center (SEC) Battlespace Systems Support Directorate. Her experience includes design, implementation and integration for large-scale software communications systems. Ms. Glaser is trained in CMMI, is a US Army Lean Six Sigma Black Belt candidate, and a member of the Software Quality Assessment project team. She helped pioneer the SEC CMMI Process Group and Appraisal Team and currently leads an LSS project to lean and improve software processes to better support the warfighter. Ms. Glaser has a BS in Computer Science from Montclair State University.

Michael D. Barnett is the CMMI Coordinator at MTC Technologies, provider of a wide range of sophisticated system engineering, intelligence, information technology, and program management solutions, primarily to the Department of Defense and various intelligence agencies. He has 25+ years experience in the development and monitoring of software-intensive systems, and has participated in several CMMI appraisals, both internal and external. Mr. Barnett is a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt. He has Bachelor of Arts degrees in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Virginia and a Master of Science in Computer Science from Stevens Institute of Technology.

The North Jersey SPIN (Software Process Improvement Network) is a forum for the free and open exchange of software project management process improvement expertise, experiences and ideas. Our objective is to promote software project improvement through an active program of networking and presentations, as well as partnering with similar groups. NJSPIN programs provide a broad variety of discussions to help practitioners advance the art and science of software project management and software process improvement.
